Don't have to pay? & America rescues

So I just read an MSNBC article (What am I doing reading American media? Someone forwarded it to my inbox.) They decided Tuesday night evacuees won't have to pay.

It said 350 Americans were "rescued" yesterday. I heard those ships can carry 1,200 people. I don't know what ship it was. But that would makes validate George's reaction that "The boat is empty. I can't believe this. I thought we'd be pulling out in a couple of hours to wait for it to fill up. They just said we're pulling out in 3 minutes."

RESCUED!!!! Yes, America saves the day. Like in that movie Armageddon with Bruce Willis, where in the end all the people around the world, including some Bedouins (I seem to remember) all wave U.S. flags and thank America for saving it from annihilation.

Not Americans evacuated, Americans rescued. So wait, that means they were kidnapped or put in some kind of danger. And who did that to them . . .???? Maybe it's cool to have your friends kidnap people, so you can look like the hero who RESCUES them.

Things are rarely simple. One does as much good as they can wherever they are placed.

I understand that in the situation you are in now, emotions are running high. In the light of that, the simple hope that you remain safe is the order of the day.

When you have time, later, to think about this, I ask you to consider the fact that at some point in this story, someone who doesnt even know your name risked their life for your safety. That man or woman would have done that regardless of your thoughts of him or her. Under the umbrella of politics, of policies, there are still people, both good and bad. It is easy to see things in monolithic groups, or in simplistic motives. But reality rarely affords us that luxury, if we choose to see face it. Simply stated, some of the same people whom you denigrate in this post are laying their life on the line for you as we speak. There are obvious Theological parallels that I will refrain from making, as they would be far too simplistic.

We are not simple, either, and I fully acknowledge that. Neither are our motives. But there are good people who are trying their absolute hardest to ensure that you are safe, even at the risk of life and limb. If you were to do that for one of us, we would be grateful, and view it as honorable.

In the midst of the cynicism of realpolitik, in the maelstrom of motives that defines this broken world, there are still some things that are simple. Love is simple. Sacrifice is simple. Honor is simple. Even when these things happen in a hopelessly muddled context, they are still there, and should be respected as such. Otherwise, in this broken world, we would never be able to hope or rejoice in anything, for to some degree or another, all things have been touched by the taint of sin.

Some things are simple. We fight for you. We do not ask to be seen as heroes. We do not require you to thank us, nor do we expect it. But it is important to us that you are safe. So we work toward that end. Perhaps you could cut us some slack if we do not achieve perfection. I say this with all respect and may you remain safe.
