I left my wallet in the taxi

So the guy went to my old school because I had my ID in there and to AUB because I had my hospital card in there. But he didn't leave the wallet at any of those places. Instead, AUB called me and tried to get him to come to campus to give it to me. But he refused. So I had my Lebanese friend go meet him and get it from him.

When I spoke to the guy on the phone, he told me of all his efforts to find me, driving everywhere, Facebooking me, etc. I told him I'd pay him L.L.50,000 ($33). He said, "Just..." So then I told him I'd think about it.

I told my friend to give him $50, but the guy refused. Having found a $100 bill inside, he said he would take that, otherwise I wouldn't get the wallet back.

We had no choice but to give it to him.

So then the guy friends me on Facebook. Of course, I subscribe to the mantra that just because we're friends on Facebook doesn't mean we're friends in real life. . . but was he seriously???? The jerk steals from me, and then wants to befriend me on Facebook.

Being Lebanese, he must think it's normal to extort money from people. I mean it would have been weird if he didn't, right?

I cannot believe some ppl ...
my friend's gf left her phone in the "service", the driver dialed her last number (my friend) ... we showed up gave the guy L.L.10,000 (~$6.66) for his trouble and left ... of course it was only the matter of 1 hour, and it wasn't a wallet.

my sister got robbed in June and managed to get everything back (paperwork wise - after duly filing a police report), except her phone... they finally found the phone when it was used (*ehem*)...

The person that was caught using it claimed she found the phone.. then she needed a phone for emergency (read that: calling her bf) so she went to Class(the famous phone shop) unlocked the phone password... used her sim card to call him .. and then put in a new password she forgot :P

Now try making sense of that :P

At least the ordeal is over ... it sux not having your papers.

So a cab driver who's American would not extort money from you? What does "being Lebanese" have to do with it? Be careful of the words that border on racism.

Being Lebanese myself I hope this is not the reputation we are giving people. Let's say it's a bad one in the bunch. That sucks that he did that to you. Always remember what goes around comes around. Look forward to reading your blog:)

Well, I appreciate being accused of being prejudiced and racist against Lebanese people. Of course, I am. It's coming out more and more in this blog. Wait, til tomorrow's post!!!!

Yes, there's a police station down the street. What would they have done for me??

I don't have to say that Lebanese people are inherently different from American people or any others. But the Lebanese government, society, and overall system are completely different. In the US, if a guy was standing in front of me and I had his name and number, I could file a police report on him, and make sure I got everything back.

You think I could do that in Lebanon? Are you going to tell me I have any recourse with a guy who decides to take my money?

People know they can get away with anything here. In this situation, the worst aspects of human nature have full reign.

Whenever people can get away with extortion, exploitation, and abuse, they will. I'm sure I would also abuse my maid if I had free reign to do it. If no one was going to check on me, maybe I wouldn't pay on time every month, or pay at all. I might just lock her in all day, if I was scared of losing a more than $2000 investment.

So I don't think Lebanese people are inherently inferior or sick compared to anyone else, but the government/society/system allows for things that my country, the US, just doesn't.

There is something called the rule of law. Even when my government harasses me, questions me, searches me, they give me a piece of paper with all the directions on how to file a complaint.

Lebanon is the wild west. It's anarchy. It's fawda. People can get away with anything. There is no rule of law. It's the rule of money. Extortion is the name of the game.

And Feline Revolution, why should you ever worry about offending anyone???

I'm way too tired of censoring myself.

As they say in Lebanon, stflu.

I started writing a long reply but will answer this first i guess...

I decided after fitting in too well .. that I want to behave the way I would like to see myself.. and in a sense, regarding the story of the mentally challenged girl, I feel I wasn't totally fair in the fact that I only heard one side of that story.

YES

typical fallatical Lebanese reply ...
defend by accusing on a unrelated topic

note: don't close your nose
and call $h1t a rose...
lets not discuss the list of cab-driver felonies...

some are honest... sadly not the rule...

THAT is the least you have to worry about

that one made my day, poor fellow hitting on girls by taking their money ... pity date Jane?
so chivalrous of him to return it .. and grab the content publicly .. of course he could've just thrown it somewhere... although that would've gotten him in trouble(yes).
....
Cops down the street .. not in extortion cases not in case your being robbed.. but they are good at finding things sometimes.. rule of thumb here try, never expect result , but doesn't hurt to try ... take the cab number and call in theft :)

They are also very good at other things, from what i heard (reliable sources)

I don't think you are prejudiced Jane, I maybe alone here.. but I think your experiencing and exposing the bad side of this populace... I subscribed because I like to hear ppl talk about the Elephant ...

I disagree a bit with the long post you have there but don't really want to get into it, later maybe?

and yes a lot of the Lebanese need a better education ... most are uneducated in the sense that despite their college degrees, they fail to apply common sense in daily life, half their thinking is programmed and the other half is conditioned...

Maybe that makes me prejudiced too... it seems to be the word of the decade...

And Jane...
maybe put that wallet on a chain?
that will be more productive than all these comments :P
